FIREARMS LICENSING DIVISION

Since mid-December of 2012, there has been a massive influx of citizens requesting license appointments.  Based on this unprecedented demand, we are currently booking appointments for first time and renewal applicants almost two months in advance.  Thank you for your patience.

For first time applicants (people who have never held a MA firearms license or who’s license expired prior to the MA Gun Control Act of 1998), you will need the following items for your appointment:

1. A MA driver’s license or U.S. Passport for photo identification.

2. A copy of your MA approved Basic Firearms Safety Course.  If you do not bring a copy of the certificate with you, we will not be able to proceed.  The certificate and the instructor must be MA approved or it will not be valid.  Because of state ethics laws, we are unable to recommend an instructor but you could find approved courses on line with an internet search – query MA Approved Basic Firearms Safety Courses.

3. A check made payable to Town of Marblehead for $100.  Please note, if you are applying for an
FID-D Mace/pepper spray license, the fee is $25.

4. Two pieces of mail with your name and a Marblehead residential address.  Please note, Post Office boxes will not be accepted.

To expedite the process, please down load a copy of the firearms application from the state at:  http://www.mass.gov/eopss/firearms-reg-and-laws/frb/firearms-forms-and-applications.html

The appointment will last approximately 45 minutes. It takes roughly 1.5 months for the license to arrive at Marblehead Police Headquarters from the state.

For renewal licenses, you will need the following items for your appointment:

1.  MA Firearms License that you wish to renew.

2.  Two pieces of mail with your name and Marblehead residential address to help verify you live here.  Please note that Post Office boxes cannot be accepted.

3.  A check for $100 made payable to: Town of Marblehead.  Please note that if you are 70 years of age or over, renewals are free.  If you are renewing an FID-D license for Mace or pepper spray only, there is not fee.  If you are over 70, there is no fee.

To expedite the process, please down load a copy of the firearms application from the state at:  http://www.mass.gov/eopss/firearms-reg-and-laws/frb/firearms-forms-and-applications.html

The appointment should last approximately thirty minutes.  It takes roughly 1.5 months for the renewed license to arrive at Marblehead Police Headquarters from the state.

There is a 90-day grace period, which begins to run on the date the license is set to expire provided you have started the renewal process prior to expiration.

Please contact the firearms licensing unit at or 781-631-1212 x 76 to schedule an appointment.

DO NOT bring weapons to your appointment. If you have old ammunition that you wish to turn in, please contact the dispatch center at (781) 631-1212 x 0 and an officer will respond to your home/business. For safety reasons, please DO NOT bring weapons / ammunition into the police station.
