Dog Licenses

When Do I have to license my dog?
All dogs in town must be licensed at 6 months of age in accordance with state law. The cost of the license is $15.00 for a spayed/neutered dog with a spay/neuter certificate or documentation from your vet and $20.00 for an intact dog (or without a spay/neuter certificate) All dog licenses expire December 31st each year.  Dogs must be licensed by January 31st to avoid additional fines.  State law and the Town by-law allows for a $50.00 fine to be assessed every 30 days starting February 1st.  A rabies certificate is required to obtain a dog license. You may obtain a rabies certificate from your veterinarian.

Renewing Dog Licenses
All dog licenses are renewed on an annual basis according to state law. The re-licensing period in Marblehead for dog licenses is January 1st through January 31st. This office sends out a registration form with the annual census each year.

1) On-line:  The Town of Marblehead is pleased to enable residents to pay for new and renewed dog licenses online!

PLEASE NOTE: A valid rabies certificate is required by state law to purchase or renew a dog license.  For spayed/neutered dogs, the Town Clerk’s Office must also have a spay/neuter certificate or documentation from your veterinarian on file. The new online payment system will require you to upload these documents prior to making your payment.

 * The online payment processing is provided by an outside company, City Hall Systems.  This company is separate and apart from the Town of Marblehead.  A fee of $0.50 per transaction is charged for using the online payment option.  If you experience difficulties paying your bill online please call City Hall Systems at 508-381-5455 and they will assist you.

2) In person:  You may purchase a new or renewed dog license in person at the Town Clerk's Office.  If renewing please contact the office to make sure we have up to date rabies and spay/neuter(if applicable) certificates on file.  Please click on the following link for office hours and directions:

3) By Mail:  You may renew your dog license by mail if you send a copy of your rabies certificate from your vet and appropriate fee.    In order to obtain a license for $15.00 you must send a spay neuter certificate or documentation from your vet.  If renewing please contact us to see if we have up to date rabies & spay/neuter(if applicable) information.  Please click below for the dog license application form.
